My Self portrait off camera flash
Lens: 18-55

Ah! Yes the self portrait... as much as I hate taking pictures of myself, one sometimes needs a Facebook profile pic. I used a Westcott Apollo Softbox with a Sigma EF 530 flash about 45 degrees to camera left. I know being dead center is not always prefered but I think it works here. Remember don't judge the subject just the picture.

+1 or maybe even 3 or 4,what could be interesting is the Rembrandt thing about taking a series of portraits as you get older, quite a thoughtful shot btw.

I think that you got the lighting right! Self portraits are difficult, you never know how to pose without it looking posed, but you did a good job with that too.

Seems ok, the look's a little funny but then again self-portraits are tough. It's a bit of a tight crop, though.

I like the lighting a lot.
I wish this was a landscape oriented though. I think it would compliment your stance and bring more intensity to the image. On the other hand, if this is for FB then I guess that you want the pic pretty tightly cropped.
Nice job!
P.S> If you do end up taking another shot at this pic, close your mouth.

Hey Elp thanks for the comments I agree that landscape orientation would have been great the problem I had was that a couple of inches to the right I have the kitchen and a couple of inches to the left I have a busy fireplace. Ohh and the open mouth thing it's funny you mention that I actually can't really close my mouth I have a bit of an overbite and I have been a mouth breather all my life (think Napolean Dynamite) so closing it feels really unnatural. =)
