Stone Steps

I felt pretty strongly that there was an image here somewhere... but when I got home and looked at what I shot... well this was the best of the bunch and it really lacked any interest. The second image is my first stab at pp but I'm still not happy with it. Thought I'd throw it out there for some suggestions on how I might shoot or pp it differently. Any thoughts?

I love the composition, and the b&w conversion is very nice, but I think they're both missing a focal point. Something that isn't just a part of the stairs. Nearly anything might have worked, from an abandoned beer can to a small furry creature to a pretty girl. It does a very good job of drawing the eye into the image, but to what?

In the color version, the moss *almost* does it, and then the little plant in the lower right *almost* pulls it off.

I love both images as a starting place, though. I can't tell how big it is, but I'd mark that place in memory for location portraits in the future. Just in case.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually had my kids with me (this is at a park not that far away). I should have had them in the photo rather than climbing the wall just outside the frame :-)

I'll definitely try it again next time we go back. Probably with some fill flash too because the steps descend into an area that's pretty overshadowed by trees. The flash might help highlight whatever subject I try and at the same time provide a little clarity to the depth where the steps curve up and to the right.
