Philadelphia City Hall- detail
Lens: DA 55-200 Camera: K100D Photo Location: Philadelphia, PA ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F11

This image is upper detail of Philadelphia's City Hall. I am a former Pentax Spotmatic/Tri-X user (1970s)and have never lost my interest in B&W. I am now trying to learn to do B&W digitally using LR3 for conversion. This image has been slightly tweaked for sharpness and contrast. Let me know how/what I might have done differently, please. Thanks in advance.

All of the interesting detail in this image is in the bottom 60% or so of the tone curve, so there's lots of room to increase the contrast where it matters. As to how to do this without blowing out highlights there are choices, e.g. make a fairly conservative curve adjustment that keeps the highlights in range, or treat the sky and bright highlights separately (I gather you can do this in LR but I am not an LR user), or even HDR (would not be my choice for this image).

Select the bottom half of the shot with the magnetic lassoo tool, feather around 50 pixels, and bump the contrast brightness up.

I agree with those above, the brightness and contrast needs a bump on the lower half. If you're keen on b&w in digital you should really check out the Topaz or NIK b&w plugins. They work quite well and allow for infinite variations.
