Shooting wide open is always more difficult, but you seem to have gotten good results in #1 and #3. #2 is less effective given the face being turned away and focal plane not being even enough to get the whole face in focus, but #1 isn't too bad a result.

My general suggestion is to stop down perhaps to f/2.8 or f/4 to get better sharpness and slightly more DoF to incorporate the important parts of the face in sharper focus (unless the face is perfectly perpendicular to the line of sight). That would have enabled the left eye in #1 to be in sharp focus and thereby making for a better overall result.

Thanks for the feedback Ash! I agree. A little more DoF would have been ideal. The element that draws me to #2 is the hard contrast of the profile silouette against the dark background.

Number 3 is a gem.
I would prefer sharper facial focus — especially on the eyes.
Best wishes.

I agree with the above comments. Stopping down a bit to get enough DoF especially the eyes. On number one it looks like the right eye is sharp but not the left. I would crop #1 up a bit from the bottom to just above the knee. Photo #2 doesn't work for me due to the lack of sharpness and as you can't see much of the face nothing to engage the viewer. Photo #3 probably works the best but would have benefited from more DoF too. You've got a captive subject so lots of opportunities for a reshoot. I've got a nephew who, whenever I see him is taking photos of his kids and I mean a lot. I'd be surprised if they numbered less than 20k. Keep shooting they change fast.

I really like the first one.. Maybe a bit of cropping the space on top and the leg. BTW, your youngest looks nice. All the best for him.

as a father of 6 months old I can relate a lot to these and to difficulties you are facing trying to MF 55mm @1.8.
Anyway, I think the results are good and especially like the colours in them.
#1 is very nice pose but the missing hand and showing knee kind or ruin it for me
#2 is the weakest, it seems you got the focus right but the ear is taking too much attention and it's OOF so it kind of doesn't work
#3 is superb! Wallhanger IMO!

regards
P

Thanks for all of the feedback folks! I'm shooting a lot of digital these days but there is something really, really cool about film. I just started using my grandfathers old K1000 this past summer and the shots posted here are from my second roll of 35mm film, ever!
