First image is great - love the pollen. Second you needed more depth of field or to be more parallel with the bug to capture it at less of an angle (if that makes sense - I'm probably too tired to be writing critiques).

I think a reason why images 2 and 4 are particularly impressive is because either the eye in the foreground is in focus or, if that eye is not extremely sharply in focus, that's not obvious.
I hope to see more of your work.
By the way, my experience with photography of insects — other than butterflies — is extremely limited.
Respectfully,
Stu

#2 is lit the best - hence the smoother rendition that is well suited to macro insect shots.
The others are harsly lit and make for less flattering images. The depth of field is indeed an issue in all of these shots, so bear in mind that the closer you get, the thinner the depth of field, even if you're on the same aperture setting. Stop your lens down and balance your lighting, then get the right 'pose' for the insect, and you'll improve your results.
Hope that helps.

Thanks riff. Really...
Why don't you go do something useful ... like comment on the photos I've posted.

Can anyone help me with the lens? It's a Vivitar 90mm 1:2.5 MC Macro Telephoto Serial no. 28500669. I can't find any reviews on it, there's a Vivitar 2.5 that's 1:2 macro and a 2.8 that's 1:1, however this is a 2.5 AND 1:1 without adapter. It seems sharp enough, in fact sharper than the takumar 100mm f4 and Pentax-m 50mm macros I have. Serials starting with 28 are supposedly Komine manufactured, but again I can't find a matching f2.5 with true 1:1 macro. It's as if this lens doesn't exist, yet it's sitting on my camera now.

maybe post a picture of the lens...? A lot of these lenses were manufactured by different companies, somebody here could recognize it.

Edit: as I suspected when writing the above, I remembered reading something about this as being a different brand, but the same lens as the panagor 90mm pmc macro f/2.8. It might say 2.5 but.. effectively probably it´s all the same. If I´m right your lens should look almost the same as the panagor.

Here is the review, scroll down considerably and you´ll find a comment with lots of info... the last comment made. I don´t know the person but seems reliable: https://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/panagor-90mm-f2-8-macro-pmc.html

Yes that's it, the Vivitar 90mm f2.5 is listed. Looks like a keeper, my father picked it up from someone at work for next to nothing. £15 I think it was!

Wow, nice pricing! I can only tell you this panagor was my first lens beside the kitlens and it is until this day probably still my most used lens (in stead of the fa & dfa macro lenses I also have now) So congratulations and have fun.
