Lizzy at the Beach
Lens: SMC-PENTX-FA 1:1.4 50mm Camera: K20D Photo Location: Allenhurst Beach ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F6.7

Always had trouble with portraits. This was a quick shot of my daughter at the beach. It was a little windy and she was nervous on the rocks. Did some processing, but nothing fancy. Was interested in any criticism to make the shot better(besides getting rid of the compression artifacts that showed up on the post).

I am no expert! & this is just my beginner opinion; but her one leg bent and the other leg twisted bother me. If I paid for photos I would not hang this one up. I am sorry
:-( She is a little cutie, and does look a little nervous.

Thanks Tweet,
The left leg looks REALLY awkward, now that I look at it. I usually zoom too close in on the face, so I'll have to be more aware of whole body on these shots.

The position of the right foot bothers me more than that of the left one. It seems really twisted. I would suggest cropping the image like this. The image also lacks pop, partly because it is a bit underexposed. Ideally, you should also try to clone the left shoe out, if you have Photoshop (I haven't). More generally, the problem is that the portrait is neither a "posed" portrait nor an "action" portrait. It is in between: not relaxed enough for a posed portrait but no movement to suggest action. Still, a nice record of a good day out.

Thanks fg-one,
I think your cropping definitely looks better. I do need to commit to what kind of portrait I take. I do, unfortunately take too many shots that fall in between posed and action. I also tend to want to save too much of the background.

Thanks,
Reed

You have nicely cloned the shoe out. Well done!
Another option if you wanted to keep more of the nice surrounding rocks, would be to try a square format on the upper part of the image.

Forgive me for jumping in here, but that is a good idea.

It seems to me that we always (I do) try to crop to the 4x6 snapshot size (portrait or landscape).

fg-one,
As MTansley pointed out (and can't be pointed out enough), excellent advice about changing the format. Us old timers always think inside the traditional photo dimensions.

Jasvox, unfortunately the extremely incompetent army corp of engineers thought throwing big black rocks in the ocean, would somehow keep the sand in place. Unfortunately all they did was cause shoreline erosion and change powdery white sand into a black and beige coarse mess. At high tide, where Lizzy is standing, sadly there is no beach.

To see examples of the sand, you can look here...https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/182624-nature-playing-be...pth-field.html

Thanks,
Reed
