K-5 kit lens with extension tube
Lens: Pentax DA 18-55mm AL WR Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: West Molesey ISO: 80 Shutter Speed: 1/180s

Decided to try using the kit lens with a macro tube (no glass). The results were surprising. *Edit: changed the exposure on the last image to brighten it up.

You've done well. I tried to shoot a bunch of ants out front on a few occasions, and haven't got anything I'd post yet. I even had the advantage of having an ant trying to recover a fallen comrade, so he wasn't rushing all over the place. A couple of those are reasonably sharp, but I don't think I got the angle right so that you can see what the one ant is doing to assist the others. The rest of the collection is nice, although you might want to try brightening the last photo.

It was just a 21mm extension tube, for autofocus. Although you really don't want to use autofocus! The lens has no aperture ring so you wont be able to use a manual one.

Day 2 and the kit lens has more surprises in stock...

I took the 18-55mm kit lens out again, using a 21mm extension tube (cheap Jessops set). Light was much better so I was able to focus a bit more clearly. I'm very happy with the results, this lens is drastically underrated.

You need to darken the third photo in this second set. But otherwise, you've done very well with the kit lens. If my K-mount tubes weren't missing the locking pin (which keeps the lens in place) I'd be tempted to give it a try.
