National (Canada) Capital Marathon 2012
Lens: Sigma APO DG 70-200mm 1:2.8II Macro HSM Camera: k-5 Photo Location: Ottawa ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F5.6

On Sunday, I took my K-5 for its first (and mine) outing to a sporting event. I set the K-5 to Aperture priority mode, f:5.6, the ISO to Auto, range up to 800. I figured that I needed at least a shutter speed of 1/500 in order to "stop action" of human runners. However, as the light grew stronger, I felt I needed to guarantee myself that speed, so I switched the mode to TAv and set the speed to 1/500. I used a tripod throughout. As the morning went on, I noted that the ISO did come down somewhat. I'm satisfied that, in general, the photos I took were pretty well exposed and there was little motion blur. A little more depth of field would have been welcome. I also used, throughout, "AF C". I was advised, given it was my first outing, that I should "take lots of pictures" - I did. I switched from customary RAW to .jpg, loaded a 16GB memory card, and carried another 8GB as back up. I set the camera to "continuous shooting, High" and got shooting. I'm not at all unhappy about the 2400 photos I took in the three hours I stuck it out at the race. I took a day to cull the photos down to about 1500.
I would very much appreciate some advise on the foregoing general setup - what might I have done better?
The attached photo was taken at about 7:40 a.m.. They were the lead pack. The original photo was not nearly so washed out in the background but many of the faces were almost lost, partly because of the low light but also because of their colour. I'm afraid my PP skills are not so good that I know how to lighten the central figures and keep the background exposed decently.
Anyway, enough talking! I offer three (of 1500) for your critique!

I just discovered that PE, Shadows/Highlights, does a much better and straightforward a job than does Lightroom 4's exposure control. I need to learn more about Lightroom 4!

Nice pics. Difficult to criticize. Well done!
