Portrait of a boy
Lens: DA*16-50 Camera: K20D Photo Location: USA ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/180s Aperture: F4.5

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Built a DIY softbox and shot with the 2 strobes, one from camera left about 9' in the air. The softbox was camera right and below the subject. Just learning to use the strobes and would like learn alot more! Please help!

Minor post processing to warm it up and sharpen slightly.

Thanks!

Good first effort.
I think raising the softbox would improve the shot--lighting a portait from below can give an "eery" effect.
Look at the catchlight in his eyes--that is, the reflection of your light source. A good rule of thumb is to light so the catchlight is at 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock on the iris.

What johnyates said.

I don't know how refined this attempt is but my additional feedback:

1. Background cheapens your good work, so get something more uniform.

2. Lose the blue helmet straps if possible. Tie or tape them up inside the helmet. They are not flattering.

For me the lighting from below does not give a natural look (the sun is generally above us, so we expect light from above mostly). Usually light from below indicates a sinister position. Look at all the old horror films and you'll notice the bad guy is usually lit from below!

Nice pose. If you can't live without the blue straps, shorten the one end that is dangling.
