I see from the settings you were having serious difficulties with low light forcing you to use rather undesirable settings for the shot. Not sure how I would have gotten that one myself without a flash which might have wrecked it since I'm not an expert at subtle fill flash.

Might have worked better to rotate yourself about 45 degrees to the right to catch a bit more of the girls profile and you might have been able to get them both in focus even with that aperture since they would have been on a more even plane. I think the woman in back was actually blurred slightly by the slow shutter speed but it could just be out of focus due to the wide aperture.

Very nicely done.

The only thing I can suggest (I know, too late now) is next time try to have the little girl focused, and perhaps have some of her face visible.

It took me a few moments to work out there was a little girl there, which distracts from what would have been a touching moment between the two.

Me, too - I thought it was a bag in the foreground. The black hair and black jacket blend together, and the odd hand at left is intrusive.

Helpful comments. But, did I get the NatGeo look?

NatGeo

A crop of the old mans face might get the look of National Geographic - the writing on the jacket would be a no no.(just my opinion)

I think not. A lot of distracting elements - fur, stripes, hand. Much out of focus or hidden. I would make a tighter crop, just inside the hand at left, some off the bottom and right, perhaps.

I would have to say it's not national geographic. There are only a few photographers in the world who shoot at that level. They have years of experience and shoot thousands of images on assignments and out those a handful are chosen. A lot of difficulties with the image. We see the back of the girls head not her face and it's OOF. The hand reaching in to hold her jacket and a number of distracting elements at the sides, bottom and in the background. You could blur out the background and crop in to reduce the clutter and tweak the image to give it more punch. I did a quick edit to show what I mean. Posted it here Suggested edit of photo by Joeseph Mei | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Just my 2 cents.
Regards
Greg

If you want to go nat geo you are going to have to go way more into photographing with intent. Capturing the unique. Not just the things that are sweet and nice, but the things that just grab you.

Good suggestions so far. Let's see if this gets me closer. Not much I could have done with the OOF issue @ F2.0
