Marc, it is the Pentax 35mm f/2.4 and I have a polarizer on it... It is an inexpensive version of the f/2.8, takes awesome photos, but doesn't do macro.
Very much on my I wanna buy it list and your images just pushed it a few notches higher.

+1 for Gimp - great way to start out to learn about layers.

I am going to look into Gimp now. Hope it works with Mac.

Marc, I should also let you know that the f/2.4 can close focus even though it is not macro. I stuck that lens practically into the ice and it focussed just fine. I was so surprised and pleased.

Tess, I would submit all of these. Some of the judges, at least, critique the images they judge.

Mike, I only have Aperture and it doesn't do much outside of the basic RAW conversion. I can adjust highlights, shadows, sharpness of course. It also has brushes to dodge and burn etc. But it doesn't do layers. I was thinking of getting Topaz as PS for a Mac is 800.00, but I sure wish I had it and knew how to use it.
I managed to get almost the same output by reducing the brightness a couple of steps (-20 out of 100) and increasing the contrast a whole bunch (+50 out of 100).

I like the highlight left in the first one . I wasn't sure at first ,but seeing it without the light streak, I think it helps balance out the yellow in the large flower near it as well as balance the entire photo. My vote is to leave it in. Just my humble opinion for what it is worth
I have Gimp and have yet to figure it out. But then by the same token I have PS Elements 9 and still trying to learn how to use a lot of it's features.
