I can't identify a subject around which to frame a composition. There is no apparent reason (to me at least) for any part of this image to be in focus while the rest is not.

as above; i agree with the bloke from melton. there is no actual focal point or subject for the image. perhaps if the DOF were much wider, it would be interesting because more of the nicely-textured bark would be in focus. though, even then, you might be pushing it.

i honestly don't mean to sound harsh, but as a stand-alone shot, there isn't much that's interesting about it. if it were a supporting shot in a series, it'd do better

No worries, I was asking! This was a test shot with the Sigma macro lens. I am super happy with the exposure and the performance of the lens, not to mention I have become a fan of Tmax, but I was surprised by how narrow DOF was. I was trying to capture the split in the bark that is in focus, but wasn't sure if there was a way to compose for this sort of subject at macro. I got nough compliments on it I thought I would seek advice.

My impression was that you made a surrealistic photo of Archimedes the Dog’s “Bark”! In that, my opinion was that you accomplished it quite well, even including his varying pitch!

I like this part with the owl telling the turtle what's what (or whatever)

You are entitled to exclaim "Eureka" like Archimedes of old to celebrate that discovery.
