composition/cropping question
Lens: promaster 70-300 Camera: k100d Photo Location: Hebgen Lake, MT

I captured this scene on a recent family reunion in Yellowstone. That morning was calm and quiet, and I managed a nice shot of this heron hunting for breakfast along the lakeshore in the mists. My question is, which composition do you think works better - the one with the foreground left in, or the one with more foreground cropped out?

Kinda what I figure the main opinion was gonna be I still like the original too, but yeah, it does work better cropped.

Kinda like the first one. It seems to tell a story about the solitary nature of the hunting heron.

Hi,
The first photo is much better! I'm a big opponent of the frame and a variety of "autographs" on photos, distracting the viewer and do not allow the composition to "breathe"!
regards Velja

Thanks, we each have our opinions :-) I use frames and titles sometimes, and I skip 'em sometimes. I'm neither a big proponent nor a big opponent...

I like the second one. In the first pic, that big blank area in the lower right doesn't add anything to the pic so it needs to go.

The second one. The first has the large dead space in the lower right and seems more like a landscape photo that happens to have a bird in it. The second has eliminated most of the dead space and is a photo of a heron on a misty morning. I don't mind frames and names. Can go either way on it. Perhaps a lighter, smaller font that isn't so noticeable would work better if you want to have one.
