Frozen barn
Lens: DA* 50-135 (at 50mm) Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Ottawa, Canada ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/750s Aperture: F8

I tried to capture a harsh feeling in this photo. I waited for particularly strong gusts to kick up the snow and shot directly into the sun to generate flare. Someone with experience being out in windy -30 C weather and blinding winter sun should be able to 'feel' this shot. The photo initially might appear to have noise, but it's actually backlit snowflakes covering the entire scene.

Does it work?!

B&W conversion in Silver Efex.

I'm no expert, but it looks great to me! I really like the effect that you got with the wind blowing the snow on the ground. Almost makes it look foggy/misty. Really well done!!

I have been in weather very similar to that of late. Your photo conveys it perfectly. Nice capture.

Thanks to each of you for your comments. I've never had 100% positive critique of a photo before, so I'm pretty stoked! With that said I still welcome comments on what could be improved.

Cheers

I'm loving this. The sun glare that is given off just makes it work, well at least for me.

I would frame this up or even use this as my phone wallpaper.

Never one to leave well enough alone, I made some tweaks!

After studying a print of the photo for a day, I felt that the barn needed to be opened up a bit (dodged) and that there was a distracting halo around it and the horizon; here's the new version.

Thanks again for all your comments!

Personally I prefer the fist picture.

The darkness of the barn really adds to the feeling of cold and desolate.

I like the halo removed, but I like the darker barn as well.

The main thing I was working on was the foreground. To my eye with too much contrast the snow lost it's character as snow - light and airy and tended to look too much like a monolithic gravel pit in front of the barn.

Always a problem working on someone else's work - you don't know how far you can go without turning it into your picture.

In any case reasonable people may differ.

Good points so far, all. The lighter barn does make the shot more about it than the feeling of being there. And the photo looks almost HDR on screen, now. I still think it needs to be dodged slightly for printing purposes (the barn really blocks up on paper), just more subtly than I've done here.

Wildman, I probably need to take the 'structure' and 'soft contrast' down a bit in Silver Efex to get more softness in the snow. Thanks for that suggestion.

Now to gestate!

Cheers,
Mark
