People Advice for portraits?

I don't think it is the lens that is your problem with this image. I think the biggest problem is the time of day the photo was taken. Mid-day light is very hard to get great portraits in. Understanding light is a cheap way to improve your shots.

In addition, all of the previous suggestions about composition, background, and over exposure are correct. Here is your image with the subject off-center, the play equipment removed, contrast & saturation bumped, and a little sharpening applied.
