A Little Telephone Bokeh
Lens: Sigma 28-80 Camera: Pentax K200D Photo Location: Hinton Historical Museum Oklahoma ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/60s Aperture: F5.6

This one came from trying my hand at getting a good bokeh. I tried about a dozen shots and this one was the best. I was focused on the mouthpiece of the one with the chrome bells. I would have liked to seen a bit more on the closer ones. Was I doing something wrong? I had the aperture opened up all the way. I think I need a faster lens.

It is hard to get much bokeh when you use an aperture of f5.6. Most of the good bokeh shots are at f1.4 to f2 unless there is a large distance between the main subject and the background.

That's what I'm finding out. That was the largest appature I could get on the A setting. I should have tried dialing it down manualy. I'm still pleased with the shot for my first go around with this camera.

If you were using a zoom lens, that is probably the largest aperture it has at the focal length. I have a couple of zoom lenses that are 3.5 on the wide end and 5.6 on the long end of the zoom. Nothing I can do to change that then to upgrade the glass.

You could have also tried standing back and zooming as far in as you could go (80mm) while keeping the aperture at the lowest setting - of course, that may have been what you did; it's impossible to tell. Either way, if you're not happy with these results, then you'll probably have to change your lens to something that's faster.

Just a note: it was really hard to get a handle on the photo at the size you posted here. It looks much better on its actual flickr page. I can tell there that you nailed the focus on the chrome bells. I think I would have at least tried this in portrait orientation so that you could see the phone that you focused on in its entirety.

Thanks for the comments. I know I'm going to have to move up to a faster lens. I'm going to try to go back and retake this pic after I pickup some lenses from my dad that he has with his K1000. I know one of them is a 50mm prime but that's all I can remember.
