I found this duet very interesting. I guess, the soft light would be less destructive.

Yes, the dappled lighting makes a hash of the interesting patterns and textures in this scene. A solution when shooting in such conditions is to get much closer and work with a single detail. For example, the lion's head alone is quite interesting in this light.
