Weird "pixelation" when shooting against a solid black background
Lens: DA 55-300 Camera: K-50

Dont know if you guys can see it but last night when viewing on my monitor at home, it was way more obvious. At work today, I can hardly see it. There is a "pixelation" on the left hand side when I shot against the solid black background. It was shot with the 55-300 @ 150mm f18 paired with the Raynox DCR-150. I used an off camera flash for the shot and the pixelations were visible in the raw photo as well, so no they are not a result of anything done in PP.

I actually forgot to take my UV filter off before attaching the Raynox so not sure if it has anything to do with it. Could this be a result of the absence of an AA filter on the k-50 since the black background was actually a notebook case (yeah stupid I know) with a very faint pattern?
Just want someone with a calibrated monitor to tell me if its visible because it could be my monitor at home for all I know. Its a Philips LED 22", so probably not the best for photography.

I dont see any pixelation, maybe you have some issue with monitor. try cleaning it.

thanks for your reply.what do you mean by cleaning it?my monitor is spotless and I dont think tiny specks of dust on the screen can cause pixelation.

I do see a pattern but it goes all the way across the shot in a line shape I assume it is a pattern in the back ground . It is about half way between the caterpillar and the top.

thinking about it, that might be a result of using flash against a black background. there is some banding present, so maybe thats what it is. is there any way to solve that except for PP? flash power maybe or flash direction?

I don't quite see the phenomenon in question. I would guess it is a JPEG conversion/compression artifact that you often see in color/tone gradients. Google "Gradient Banding" or "JPEG Gradient Banding" for possible solutions.

dont think it is because I could see it straight in ACR with the RAW file.

Are you viewing the actual RAW file or the preview? Are you viewing the actual pixels (100% zoom) or a scaled image (<100%)?

I can make out the "band" (above the caterpillar's head) running across teh image, but nothing that looks really pixellated to me.

when i first saw it, i thought it might be sensor related, but hasnt happened before and is not present in the other images i took of the caterpillar.

not sure what you actually mean, but i was viewing the raw file in ACR at both 100% and fit to page view and I could see the pixelation and banding in both.
