Hello Paul

There is something wrong in this picture. Background is ok, but should there be hole mast or more side of the barge on photo... or those background mast makes look little messy.
This like many of my photos; good idea but still lacking something.

I like the black and white conversion but I think the crop is a little tight. This probably is in line with LeGuillotine's comment.

I agree with the crop being too tight, I love the location, subject and contrast though!

Boats like this are hard to capture just right. You need a really wide lens to capture it all and still be close enough to get the details that you want to show.

Maybe try a pov from close to the ground, about ten feet away from the boat and looking up to get the masts.

I like this, and think you did right to do it in monochrome, especially as you have captured a good sky.

I did a double take on the boat, as I have sailed on another boat a similar name - Vigilance - which is a Brixham gaff rigged ketch trawler.

Speaking for myself only, I do have a deep love and appreciation for vessels. This black & white capture speaks volumes as to age and abandonment. Composition isn't bad, but this would be one subject that would have worked being dead center with the angle of the vessel offering more perspective. Overall it is a good shot of an old work horse. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comment Tonytee. I want to go back and capture it again some day taking into account the comments everyone has made about it.

Hello. I see what you are saying. I am curious as to whether it would be better to view a color version. I am curious as whether it may be a better view as a horizontal photo. I know the rule about vertical subject, vertical photo however there are always exceptions as in this case it may provide improved composition as well. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Thanks,

Tony
