help me understand banding/posterization
ISO: 50

I'm looking for a little insight from you post-processing gurus. I've been playing around with a K135 2.5 using a close-up lens (Canon 500d). Here's a shot from this afternoon:

As you can see, there's quite a bit of banding/posterization in the OOF areas of the frame, and I'm curious why that's the case. Is it a matter of using the close-up attachment on a legacy lens? Perhaps choosing too wide of an aperture? I don't think I've gotten too wild-and-wooly with the processing, but the Flickr algorithms do seem to exacerbate the issue.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Just jpeg compression when making a screen image. It is not actually "in" the image at all, not in the original capture, so it has nothing to do with the lenses or apertures or close-up attachments or even the camera. If you have a RAW file of the image and made a print of it, it won't be there unless you really did do something to degrade it in processing. It is typical to see compression artifacts in lo-res images when you have a mostly solid color gradient like that.

Thanks for the reply! I thought it might have something to do with changing file formats, but since I was also juggling some new-to-me hardware, I wanted to make sure I wasn't degrading the image from that end as well.
