what could be better in regards to the compostion? Knowing that the the lens is poor, and the contrast is worse

I would have tried to get rid of the window and the more or less empty wall in the left side. Maybe tried a step to the right or simply gone further in the alley. I think this pic needs color or heck of a lot more contrast....

Without standing there looking at the scene it's hard to say exactly but try going back and holding the camera down low. I mean really low. I've done a few recently where I put the camera either near or on the ground even or I was laying prone.. all the way up to kneeling... then I also will try standing on something... a stool, a bench, a 5 gallon bucket... anything...so that I can get up higher... I have also held the camera very high above my head with live view on and just took a bunch of shots with slight variations in the composition to see which one turns out.

To me your shot was taken just standing there which is kind of plain bread and butter. But it does not provide any perspective.

All I can say is try all different angles and combinations... shoot down on it, up on it, shoot slightly from the right or left in order to create a sense of depth.

Also try getting a lot closer and shooting with a wider lens and see what happens.
