Bad News
Lens: Pentax 50-200 Camera: KS-2 Photo Location: Thouand Oaks CA ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/125s Aperture: F4.5

A mistake leads to a better picture. This man had just received some very bad news. The camera is obviously near focused. In this case, the softness of his face adds to the shock and confusion evident in the photo. Sometimes a mistake leads to a better picture.

I feel sorry for him.
But speaking technically, the photo obviously transmits the shock of the moment for the subject which makes it and excellent one. I confess that for me, at first glance, it was hard to see the soft out of focus of the face. I think his hand is sharply focused or am I mistaken?

absolutely right - why do we never think of doing that sort of thing deliberately? I'm a great believer in there being lots of subtle ways you can convey things which aren't purely or at al visual in a photograph, and this certainly adds to that list
