sugar melting on strawberry
Lens: Tamron 72B - 90mm f2.8 macro Camera: K-3 Photo Location: my kitchen ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/15s Aperture: F2.8

hand-held, fluorescent lighting - I know a tripod would help dramatically, but did not have one at the moment that the sugar hit the berry...

any suggestions beyond the tripod/aperture are appreciated...

To me the image is overall too soft. You need to increase the f stop to get much better DoF. Try it at F11. More light would also be necessary of course. Check out this desert...

You can almost taste the subject!

What I would like to see is more red on the strawberries as a more contrasty photograph. I do not know if in some PP Editing Software if it is possible to isolate a part of a photograph in order to increase saturation. Overall I think it is a nicely done effort. Many thanks for sharing.

A bit higher angle and better lighting could improve the picture. There are too many shadows on the bottom part that kind of hide the deliciousness in my opinion. Not a food macro expert so take it with a grain of .. sugar?

Never ever ruin the strawberry with sugar!

I would use a deeper DoF. I like your composition otherwise!

It's 3.5 years later, are you still taking suggestions?
You ruled out the lowest hanging fruit, which is to use a narrower aperture to get a couple edges of the berries in focus along with the sugar crystals, and Shake Reduction is working well in this photo, but you could have gotten another 2 stops of exposure by using ISO 1600. You can always apply noise reduction later, but no amount of PP will increase your depth of field.
