Palouse Hills
Lens: Pentax 60-250 f/4 Camera: Pentax K5IIs Photo Location: Steptoe Butte, WA ISO: 320 Shutter Speed: 1/30s Aperture: F8

I took a couple of sunset shots from Steptoe Butte in the Palouse region of south-east Washington over the weekend. I think this one is my favorite from the set I posted on my blog - it's interesting because at first a different one was my top selection but today when I looked at the images again this one won me over Anyway I'm curious what you think!

That is really nice. The different colors and differing lighting provide interesting contrast, and it has detail.

I grew up on a flat prairie, so this reminds me of the never ending artistry of Mother Nature. Love the shot. The farmers must get a tad sea sick rolling over the waves.

Wonderful as is...you could play with all kinds of crops that would be equally great. The texture, lighting, color, etc are quite dynamic. I have no criticisms.

Thanks! I think the texture (and light) is what I most like about this shot.

This great image reminds me of a wee poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, called The Land of Counterpane.

When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all the day.

And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;

And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.

I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane.

Thank you for the poem!

Agree with what's been said about the texture, colors and patterns.
Like the cloud shadows. Especially like the lining in the green hills in the foreground....almost like etching.
Nice shot from a nice lens.

I can't think of anything negative about it... You've got great light that varies across the scene, you have tons of textures and lines and rolling hills and vibrant colors. It all works pretty danged good together!!

You know, I took another look at it, this time on my iPad mini with the nice retina screen, and the colors just blew me away... In portrait view on the iPad, it fills the screen, and WOW! One of the few images that tempts me to save a copy as my wallpaper . It just looks like a painting with the colors...

Thank you so much for such positive comment. Feel free to use it as wallpaper - let me know if you'd like to purchase full resolution image or prints

What a lovely photograph...the land itself seems to undulate and the lighting seems to provide additional movement in the photograph.

I'm a long time reader of Robert Louis Stevenson and have been since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I was never aware of this poem and what a lovely poem it is.

Reading the poem triggered my mind to recall a period when I was young (about 7 or 8 years old), and ill (nothing too serious, thankfully) for about two weeks and confined to bed. This was over 60 years ago, a long time.

To help tide me over during this protracted illness, my mother bought me a copy of Stevenson's novel, Kidnapped, which I still have. The pages are now yellowed to a light brown, but this condition just adds to the reading experience of this book.

Lovely scene. We drove through that region in 1991 while on vacation. Lovely area.
