Should there be more space?
Lens: TAMRON AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 LD MACRO Camera: Pentax K5 ISO: 400 Shutter Speed: 1/640s Aperture: F11

Hi All

I visited my first airshow this past weekend and have 100's of images to go through. This one is niggling me though. It's had a big crop and I'm wondering if there should be more space in front of the planes. You all know the old saying that things should look or in this case fly into the frame. The original is attached below. You'll see there is plenty of room to fly into, and how much I've cropped.

I like the first one. Maybe a bit more space on the right side.

I would experiment. At first glance I want more of the smoke trail...

Thanks for the comments, it's appreciated. UV I have experimented and the top image is what I came up with, but as I said it's niggling me. Do I add more at the front, or as you say, add more at the back? Or what I was after, a nice close up? I just don't know at the moment.

First is better. But I will try different framing/cropping to see more possibilities.
May more smoke trace. But in all cases try to do several different positions and compare them.

I prefer the first image. #2 has too much boring sky.

The interesting things in your photo are the wing walkers and how close the planes appear to be to each other. A tight crop does a good job showing that. Sometime it's okay to center the subject.

Yep. Exactly.

or

Crop the entire smoke trail, to the planes, and leave a bit of sky.
Then you have an entire diagonal.

I think I'd like more to the left and more to the right, but not as much above and below as the second image. The planes are lost in all the blue there.
So, more smoke trail and more space to "travel into" but not top and bottom. I do like the detail in the tight crop.
Anyway, cool shot!

I've looked at all of your suggestions and decided to keep what I have. Enlarging the frame with more front and back makes the planes to small for me. I have decided to give the plane colour a little boost though.

Thanks again

The detail makes it a fascinating shot.
I have a similar Sigma lens and I've found it to be surprisingly sharp in good light where I can stop down a bit.

The planes and people are the subject. Smoke is insignificant for the shot, and sky even less important.

If the plane was making big loops of smoke, that would be different.

An interesting dilemma. At first glance I liked the cropped version as I get a better look at the detail. But on reflection, the wide angle give a better perspective of flying off in in the vast blue sky. This is what I think the photo is about. The close cropped version might just as easily been done in the hanger with a backdrop. Experiment with putting the aircraft at the 1/3 intersection or the "Golden Ratio" Numerous interpretations are possible

Have you tried something in between these two crops?
