Cold and Alone
Lens: SMC Pentax-6x7 1:2.8 90mm Camera: Pentax 645Z Photo Location: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/160s Aperture: F3.2

Using the Pentax 645z in ultra cold conditions. Yellowtone National Park is a perfect place for this and the lone bison shares my view that winter is a time to move slow and save energy and think about what you are doing before you do it. My thinking here was to frame the shot, not disturb the bison, and retreat to the vehicle as soon as possible.

I like the lighting in this! The poor beast looks lonely.

Any tips and tricks for shooting in cold conditions?

We're going to North Finland in December for a week long photo trip.

Most of your gear will function fine in exreme cold, but will you? To have the patience and discipline to frame and take the shot YOU must be well insulated and comfortable or you will rush the shot. When driving, resist the urge to pass up a shot thinking you will come back to it….you never do. Have a cleaning cloth always in your pocket because you will breathe on the viewfinder or Live View and fog it up….this will happen with frusrating regularity. Have fun!!!

What a lovely scene. I can't think of anything to improve it except maybe just lifting the exposure up a little. The snow looks darker than I'd think it would, but that might actually be how the scene was...

Poor bison, I wonder if he's now fair game for the predators being alone out there.

A very nice image all around. Have you tried it in monotone? I think that a monotone treatment would add to the cold and lonely theme.

A bison can do pretty well defending themselves; and rarely are they completely alone. The rest of the herd is probably close by.

That shot is something I'd have enlarged, framed, and put on a prominent wall of my home! Right now, with it snowing; I can certainly attest as to how that buffalo feels!

You've captured the entire scene beautifully! And yes, the snow would look that dark under those overcast skies!

Very, very well done; only wish it was my image!

Love the scene here, I'd suggest upping the contrast a bit but overall great.
