The goodest boy!
Lens: smc PENTAX-DA L 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED Camera: Pentax K-30 Photo Location: Planet Omicron Persei 8 ISO: 3200 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F4.5

Please, critique away. Tell me what you guys think! I'm sure some people would say the green background is a little too distracting, and tone it down some, but I actually like how rich it is, so take that for what it's worth.

A lovely friend but...
...on a shot this close the eye does expect detail and it's a bit soft for this kind of shot.
I like the expression though - it's so "dog".

I find I agree with Wildman
it feels soft

why not try shooting at iso800 while focusing directly on the eye

some of your beautiful dog's hair has more detail than the eye

to be frank here, if you hadn't asked for a critique, I would have said nice shot

Well, critique is what I'm looking for so you're all good. It was very cloudy that day, and this dog never stops moving! So, I had to up my iso and shutter speed at the sacrifice of sharpness...Yea, it seems my camera's auto-focus is something I'm still working on getting the hang of. In a scenario like this...where it's cloudy, plus the subject keeps moving...how would you go about quickly catching focus on the eye?

It's not very high tech and elegant but I would have just shot in burst mode for 5 or 6 frames and just selected the sharpest.
And sometimes a little PP can go a long way also...

Oh cool! Can you tell me what you did? I use lightroom, and I could have upped the sharpness option, but I like to avoid noise too...should I have just sharpened it up. What did you do?

I use on1 and that is about what my edit looked like as well
you are getting much better results at iso3200 than my k30 yields

try using a treat to get the pup's attention
most (not all) of my beasts eventually figured out what "stay" meant
kind of like we are going for a walk not a smell

good luck to you

Can you tell me what setting you changed in On1? I'm not familiar with that program, but if you feel like sharing your method, I might be able to extrapolate from that and find similar settings in photoshop/lightroom.

I tried messing with the sharpness and clarity sliders in Lightroom...even added a radial filter just over the eye, but I can't seem to get the sharpness of Wildman's edit. Hmm.....

Indeed.

So far as PP advice goes... I use, and only know, Photoshop, Whatever you use stick to it and master it and don't waste your time trying to find the "best" program learn what you got.
I use Photoshop because it's powerful, subtle but complex so it's not for everyone.

Nice looking dog, love and take care of him - he's worth it.

Well, he's my brother's dog, but I would gladly take him. He's so cool...and can you believe they recently had him SHAVED! That dog has the most glorious mane ever, beautiful, and they friggin' shaved him! Not bald, but with like the shortest guard possible. Damn shame...

My dog at my mom's house always loved being shaved in the warmer months

I do have to say I love the pose. But I agree it is a little soft. But it is a lovely dog image that captures the spirit of this wonderful animal.
