Hopefully I will have other chances to photograph this beauty. I didn't have much light to work with, so I cleaned up the photo as best I could afterward. Always open to photo or editing advice and critique. I will only make me better.

Definitely a tough lighting situation.

Here's a quick edit...

You're welcome. I hope you get more opportunities with this gorgeous creature.

If you're curious, I adjusted your photo in ACR:

Highlights: -50
Shadows: +80
Blacks: +50
Clarity: -20

I was curious and your adjustments would not have been intuitive for me.

I will play these changes in Lightroom.

Just had a go with PaintShop Pro 2019, I like this as it keeps depth and freshness of the greens but that is on my average monitor!

Just had a wee go myself, not so easy with a small jpeg file, a high pass sharpening and tweak here and there.

No hokus-pokus grabs the histogram curve and drags the result visible

Did you use spot metering? I like to use spot metering with the birds because of the back lighting and they are often in a shaded location, i usually get a better exposure on the subject.

I did not and I was thinking about that earlier today. I should have. I did add some + exposure compensation and I did PP the photo, but I wasn't getting these types of results doing so. I appreciate knowing what could be done, because it inspires me to learn more.

Use RAW type for easier road work, and don't put everything on the machine.

Suggest crop some of the top off, lift shadows on the owl, darken the sky.

What was your metering method? This is a perfect situation to use spot metering.
