I don't know which hawk it is, but it's an immature one to be sure.

I would crop up to the right side of the hawk, so as to bring the eye to the hawk and not the tree branches or sky. You want people to focus on the hawk, only. The branches and sky does not bring anything to the photo. Those two things are distracting to me.

Like this.

I hope you don't mind. I copied the image took it to my editing software, cropped it, then attached it here. I did not keep the image.

A wider aperture (say f/8) would have left the background more out oif focus and less overpowering. Nevertheless, a good capture. I like it!

He shot with Aperture Priority, so the camera picked the f-stop.

I should have been more diligent in using the camera but I found the KS-1 that I shot this with frustrating to use compared to my K50. I really like shooting in Program mode on the K50 (and now my K70) and using both control wheels. The single control wheel on the KS-1 left me sort of frustrated. That is why I sold it and kept the K50 as a second body. Image wise the KS-1 is fine but I found other features outweighed the somewhat higher resolution sensor.

So yes, I should have used a wider setting than F/16 to isolation the hawk better.

But, since opportunities are fleeting it's best to do what you did, shoot what you have. Then if there's time, change settings and try different things. True that bigger aperture, lower ISO, faster shutter and composition all could have made it better if large prints are desired. Still, nicely done under the circumstances.

A tip for you. Next time try shooting in portrait mode. After all birds and people stand up, they don't lay down
