The color version shows the difference in the plants better.

I prefer the B&W version because it hides the somewhat boring sky

I thought so to. The sky really is bland.

I think the colour gives more depth to the image.

The sky looks virtually identical in both images!

Impartially yes, but b&w puts me into another mindset because the sky could have been blue while I know for a fact that the sky was a unattractive cloud with the color version.

edit: Concerning the depth of the B&W version: that can be improved with a more pronounced processing

I like your edit. The wooden walkway shows the grain of the planks. The heather is also better distinguishable. I think I have to train my editing.

I don´t see a big difference between these versions. B&W would allow me to print down the sky, darken the vegetation and print the path a little lighter. I think that what could have helped making a more dramatic statement would have been a much lower viewpoint, to give the path more relevance and show less sky.

What i like most about the black and white version is the walkway pops out to me more. I agree, the color mode seems more bland.

B&W. The foliage on the ground isn't interesting at all, so I actually like how monochrome makes it indistinguishable. It homogenizes what's on the ground as a single form which contrasts with that of the tree as the subject.

Both are good. I like the composition of the photo. The B/W has enough contrast to allow the details of the tree's branches show. However I prefer the color one for the more natural and realistic appearance.

It's nicer to explore this photo at B&W. Decidedly emphasizes the composition.

P refer the B&W, but perhaps needs a bit more pop - do you have access to Nik Silver Efex?

I generally like @othar’s try on this. BW needs some work to stand out. But there’s potential in yours. I’d say I prefer color in most circumstances, this is one of those. With a bit of exposure adjustment and some color grading this would make a fine photo imho.
