My first beach photoshoot

I was going for a Sports Illustrated/Maxim style look. I already have a few ideas for how my images can be improved, but I'd love to hear some feedback from others too.

All shot with a K10D and the Sigma 70-200mm HSM.

Well now,
Quite nice models. The first three (from Left to right ) are quite good. However your fourth shot has way to much background, and your model looks like an ant. Crop the shot and enlarge, and it would be a good shot. I haven't gone to your Flicker site to see the rest but I think your on the right track.

The first shot is done nicely but lacks some sort of impact. But the sentiment is the best.

The last 2 shots are presented in the way that their calves were chopped off. Pity about that as the 3rd shot really has that edge to it. So wild and fine art.

First shot is good but the background is unremarkable. IMO the best of the four.

The next two shots, especially the third one, are good ideas but suffer from having various parts of the model's anatomy cut off. Maybe the lack of hands in the second shot is not that big a deal but the cropping at the ankles and the "cut off" left arm in the third detract from what is otherwise a great image.

As others have said, the model is WAY too small in the fourth shot.

I'll go against the grain - I really like the 4th shot.

The others - I think #1 has to much background above the head and it really isn't an interesting background.

#2 - losing the hands doesn't help IMHO.

#3 - Ankles were really needed to pull this one off.

#4 - I like, it is a creative idea and I think it works.

#1 and #2 I don't see as anything special (sorry), too flat.

#3 - I like the framing, but would prefer it if you'd managed to get all of her all in the shot.

#4 - works for me, but a little passive. maybe mixed with the #3 pose?

my penneth.

Nice effort.

I think that you may make them even better with some tight crops and a few more interesting body positions.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely noticed in this shoot that I tend to chop things off. I guess I always try to fill the frame and end up getting too ambitious with the 0.95 viewfinder coverage. Now that I have the K20D, I can feel a less worried about zooming out a bit and having to crop.

Traditionally, professional fashion photographers preferred not to chop limbs or head off. But sometimes cropping out certain bits of a person in an image might not be that bad. Your images have a lot of things done right. Just that the image stands out and reminds viewers that things are chopped off. If viewers do not get distracted by this, cropping is fine
