Backlit Foxtail

I noticed this weed growing about 6' tall with the sun lighting it from behind. The group itself made for some great bokeh (IMO). This was submitted to the PPG and declined. Probably because stuff like this is seen everyday. Or maybe not? Thoughts?

Well you are right. But bokeh itself is not enough. You have to have a strong composition and good visual interest. In this case, your middle and background foxtails dominate and are out of focus, where clearly you intended the upper left foxtail to dominate. If you had made the second foxtail the main one and in focus and kept the repeating pattern of the out of focus foxtails in the same pattern, it would have made a stronger composition. There are many other ways you could have altered your composition to make it stronger. Backlighting always tends to dominate the frame because of its strong light, so careful placement in the picture frame is very important.

I would have made the out of focus foxtail in focus and went with that. I think that would have given a stronger impact because you see more of the middle weeds' "foxtail"; the one you have in focus, or at the front, is cut of at the top.
