Mother and daughter on the beach
Lens: 55mm Camera: K200d ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/750s Aperture: F8

Looking at the right place at the right time

Honest Criticism welcome so I can start taking more than just snap shots.

Thanks,

I think its a lovely picture and I'm entertained by the mother wearing heels on the beach, haha .

Constructive criticism wise I would say that cropping out some of the unnecessary surroundings would add more emphasis on the mother and daughter and more impact to the moment that you capture. Right now they are little more than a small part of the landscape and not really an effective focal point of the image. Obviously images of this type don't wait around for you to change to a telephoto lens so for what it is I think its a great capture, I would just crop it a little bit to add emphasis and focus to what you already have.

Tanner,
I quite like this image and would have been pleased to take it myself. I really like the
mom in her heels, and the sailboat on the horizon. The sky is rather plain which is often
considered a flaw but I think it contributes to the sense of space. Maybe in a perfect
world you would have had a polarizer mounted and adjusted but it's better that you
caught the moment, I think.

EDIT: while I was writing you posted the crop, I prefer the original, others may disagree

I too prefer the original.
A polarizer is a type of filter that blocks out haze and reflections from the sun. It also increases contrast and just allround kicks ass. Here's a comparison picture:

It dramatically improves outdoor photos, so I'd recommend buying one to anyone.

another view of reality

Good shot, but this may be a case where breaking the "rules" and cropping away from the background and pushing the horizon right to the top to emphasize the isolation of the figures on the beach might work. Hope you don't mind, , just one more version of reality. Not better, but certainly different,
Brian

I like the cropping on the original also. I would clone out the swimmers and would consider faking the sky (make it all same as upper left corner) and increase the contrast in the sea. Blasphemy to some I know.

Thanks guys for the compliments! Im just glad I was able to pull of the shot quick enough before the "moment" ended.

I might have gone for a couple of different angles at this.

I like the tighter crop, which suggests perhaps a longer lens would be better from the view point, or conversly, move closer to get more detail on the mother and child,. Either way I think you need to have the subject, as it were, closer

the longer lens might also help compress the foreground and background distance a little

the problem was of course tht the event was not something that would wait for me to switch lenses/get better angles. Overall i think it came out pretty good considering the circumstances.
