Storm photo
Lens: 108mm Camera: K200D ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F8

What do you think about this shot? Do you think it works?

Photo taken into the sun during a storm in coastal Perth.
I was taking shots in the opposite direction, but turned around and took a couple directly into the sun and clouds. I liked the look in camera, but was less sure when I got home and put it into lightroom.

Some fairly mild colour and tone adjustments.

Any feedback appreciated

Hey Jason.
This scene has the elements to create some drama, although here I'm not sure it's come out the way you may have saw it.

The subject is the sun beaming through the clouds, and instead of the lamp posts complementing it, they seem to compete with it, cluttering the image ever so slightly.

The blown highlight up top is also a little distracting and the sky's otherwise unremarkable.

Nice try though.

Hey Ash, thanks for the reply, you are right!
Particularly about the lamp posts competing with the sun, I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it makes sense.

thanks - much appreciated.

cheers

You could have created more drama by moving to the left and having the nearest lamp post nearer the centre. This would also put the sun directly behind the post to create a glow around it.
The slanting railings don't help either because they are dissecting the frame. Moving to the left would have made them more of a leading diagonal line into the frame.

I quite like how the center lamp post seems to be sending the sunrays.
Maybe a crop?

Gary, malkin, thanks for the feedback.
All your comments have been quite valuable and have helped assist my learning

malkin - thanks, I'll have a go at a crop soon and see how it goes. Do you suggest isolating the centre lamp post and cropping the others out?

cheers,

It needs more of a focal point to spark the subject matter, like maybe a car blurring by the foreground, or someone walking by in colorful rain gear.
