Sunset and Lighthouse

I am new to the forum and fairly new to photography in general.

Just looking for advice on how I could have made this pic better.

I know it's lacking something.

Welcome to the forums. I can't really critize the shot at all. A very good exposure and nicely composed following the rule of 3rds.

I might suggest a bit tighter. I'm a huge fan of 'negative space' but there might just be a bit too much empty space on the left. Maybe about 25% tighter would have worked better. Was this hand held? The tree line looks a little soft. So either the lens was wide open or you could have used a tripod for a crisper image.

But these are minor comments on an otherwise excellent effort.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, it was hand held...kind of an impromptu moment that turned into a mad scramble to capture a picture that was reasonably sharp before it got totally dark out.

I will try to crop more of the space on the left out as you suggested.

Nice shot. It's lacking a frame to hang it on the wall as far as I'm concerned.

As the others have said and I agree, there's not much to change. Don't crop it much, it's a very good shot.

I only mention the tripod thing for next time. That would allow you to stop the lens down more and get the subject looking sharper with a slow shutter speed in dim light like this. Of course if it's windy you have to go the other way and increase the ISO a bit for a faster shutter speed to stop motion blur in the trees.

Yes its very nice, lovely colors and the lighthouse there to add something interesting. Only thing is the blur on the lighthouse from handholding the shot but its not too severe

I think it's fine. the only thing I would say is maybe add a gradutated effect to the top most clouds to darken them a bit, if that's the look you're going for. Other than that leave it alone and enjoy.

Welcome and well done with the silhouette capture.
I'd agree with the suggestion of trying a graduated ND filter to tone down the harsh contrast in the evening sun. The colours seem quite bold, almost too saturated but is good.
Hard to critique sharpness from the size of the photo, but detail would be good for silhouettes.

Welcome to the group

I agree with the others, not to much to improve there that hasn't already been mentioned.

Look forward to seeing more of your work.

Light house

My Two Cents, Foster,

Vertical format, and a low view point would have enhanced the height of the light house, and also provided more of the sky which actually makes this picture. Since the trees are in silhoute and there is not much to differentiate between their forms, even if they are lesser in number, it will not make a difference to this picture. Any land scape scene, especially shot during dawn or dusk, a tripod is a must. You would have been able to use apertures smaller than f13 which would have given you a very sharp picture. I like the picture as it is now, but feel it could be improved.
Good luck on your next shot.
Kris
