1940's Geisha (?)
Lens: 50-135mm Camera: K20d ISO: 200 Shutter Speed: 1/150s Aperture: F8 

Here are some shots I did of my roommate recently:

This next one seems to be the problem. I can see the harsh shadows under the nose, maybe a fill would have been nice here? Maybe a better angle?

Turning the subjects head towards the main light source usually solves the problem.
Though having a fill light always helps - depends on the mood you want to create with the portrait.
These are OK, but as you've pointed out the harsh shadows are a problem, particularly in #3 - not just under the nose but obscuring her L eye in complete shadow. Flash needed to be on other side of camera, and perhaps softened.

A collapsible reflector, or cheap foam core board, opposite of the main light and those shadow will be less harsh. you can move the reflector be create the amount of fill you want without over lighting the shadows.
