So what do you think of this? Should I have changed the composition more to fit the rule of thirds?

A decent shot.
Looks like it would suit B&W with such tonal range.
Other than that, the framing isn't objectionable - perhaps if the subject were more to the left, it may be a more pleasing result, but the DoF may also be just a bit too shallow as well IMO.

Nice effort.

I also think the DoF is too shallow. If the entire leaf were sharp without losing that nice background, I think it would work quite well.

I agree that the dof is too thin here, but I'm pretty certain I can't get the entire straw in focus. I'll give it a try in the morning though!

Got myself a tripod too, so it might work!
