Amongst the trees
Lens: 50mm (I believe) Camera: K10D ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 4s Aperture: F22

This is my first attempt at impressionisms, inspired again by our own JMR.
Being totally new to me I am not sure what makes an impressionism work - just trying to convey the emotions at the time of taking the photo. There was nothing special about the subject - just a series of small trees lined along a hedge.

Thanks for looking, and any C&C is welcome.

Ash, I think you'll find that most people don't like this sort of photography, for whatever reasons. I'm not one of those people.

That said, I'm not quite sure this works. The colors are fantastic, and I like how you can just make out the definition of the leaves about halfway down. But I like to think that even abstracts tell a story, and I'm getting a nervous energy from this one. The uneven, bright squiggles of light toward the top just keep drawing my eyes up and to that corner when it seems like the motion is going down, down, down. I'd say if you cropped off the top third and the right third (just to keep in roughly the same ratio), you'd have a much more cohesive, interesting photo. Or you could try again =)

Ash, photographic impressionism is basically soft focus to make the image resemble a painting, like a landscape for example which means it should be readily identifiable.
I'd agree with Keitha, it needs to be telling us something but it isn't, I think you've either gone too far to be impressionist or not far enough to be abstract (there's something missing from the image in the case of the abstract).
That being said, I am quite drawn to the effect you've achieved so I'd definitely say try and do something else with it.

Thanks guys. Starting to make a lot more sense.
On second thought the image certainly has no story to tell.
Calls for a reshoot (won't even bother with this attempt).
Much appreciated to you both.

Ash, you did better than I did! I tried a shot like this before - numerous times in fact. In the end, I was stumped by the same things. Do keep us up-to-date on your progress, please, as I'd really like to see someone like yourself develop this idea!

I reckon that might just work! (knew *something* was missing)
You're full of great ideas, Gary.

Will do Keitha.
I'll think to make a project of it and experiment over the next week or so...
Thanks for the nudge.
