Another try at HDR B&W with mask
Lens: 35 Camera: K20 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 1s Aperture: F8

B&W conversion @ 16 bits and roses (flowers) masked. At least I didn't call it something like "last rose of summer." Comments?
Brian

A decent shot Brian.
Exposure seems right and the subject is well in focus.

I'm not sure HDR suits this scene all that well. Could have just done with a single exposure lit well by a single soft light source.

The color of the roses also bother me - they're washed out ?partly due to the HDR tone-mapping and partly due to desaturation. I think they would have turned out better (punchier)with more vibrancy and colour. The B&W rendition seems to have also suffered as a result, but isn't objectionable.

Just my opinion, but hope this helps.

Ash, thanks for the feedback. I was experimenting with stripping out the digital "punch" in color, so in that respect it worked. I agree the loss in saturation in the B&W areas caused by revealing the masked colors is a problem; probably needs another layer to bring that saturation back. After playing around with it some more, however, I don't really like the effect all that much and will probably push on to something else. I even pushed it further and came up with this image.

I think we're in agreement here, the technique seems neither fish nor fowl. Thanks, once again your responses are informed and helpful,
Brian
