School Assignments with Flash
Camera: Pentax K-7 Photo Location: Dawson College, Montreal

I've never posted any photographs on here before, but since I'm a student in a Professional Photography program, I do have lots to show.
Recently, in my Photo Location class, we have been focusing on using Flash on location. The first two weeks we used portable strobes (my Sigma EF530 DG Super) and this past week we got to use studio flashes (White Lightning) on location.

Here are some of the images I submitted to my teacher. Let me know what you think
Don't be shy, it's what I go to school for, I need to hear criticism. Teacher's comments can get a little mundane to hear all the time. So, anything is appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Overall I like the bottom image the best, but I think I would crop it just to left of the wall mounted light fixture. That would leave an image similar to #2, but I prefer the expression of the model's face better on the latter. The handrail ascending works well, as does the juxtaposition of the two syle of buildings. There seems to be a bit of reflection off the railings that is slightly distracting.

On the first image I like the shallow DOF and the effect it offers on the ceiling lighting. I think though I may have stepped up one stop to reduce the loss of focus about the neck and ears. Otherwise the image is crisp and clear, with good exposure.

Much as you noted I'm learning through the critique process and find it to a valuable tool on both sides of the camera.....peace.

#1 is cropped too closely on the left. And the exposure on the bridge of the nose is dicey. Looks perilously close to blown out.

#2 is the best of the three I think. I'd crop a tiny bit off the top, and try to selectively "punch up" the model, while leaving the background as is. Another light source or reflector would have been nice to ease the shadows on his face, but generally it's a pretty strong shot.

#3 doesn't work for me at all, mainly do to the awkward tilt of the model which doesn't work well with the other angles in the shot.

Thanks a bunch for your insight. The reason I didn't crop the bottom image from the left is because I quite liked the pipes/chimneys at the top right. Also, I thought it would loose it's "Editorial" portrait quality, and that's what I was originally going for. Most of my pictures were framed tightly, and I found it to be the odd man out and coincidentally it became my favourite of the bunch.
Again, thanks for your input. I really appreciate it! Best of luck with your critiquing. You've done a fine job, in my opinion.
