Nice idea but I think you were a little close and the blown highlights are a bit overpowering so you lose the silhouette effect.
A good trick with shots like this is to shoot from a position that puts an object (in this case, it would have been the thicker of the tree stems) between yourself and the sun to obscure it (fully or partially). That way you get the glow but not the full intensity of the sun.

Thanks for the advice DB.

I didn't feel that this shot was quite right but I coulden't bring myself to give up on it.
