Lens: 300mm Camera: Pentax K-X Photo Location: Buffalo, NY ISO: 1600 Shutter Speed: 1/1000s Aperture: F11

All,

Brand new to this photography stuff and would appreciate the critique on how I can do this better. Here is a shot from today. Two things I already know I need to do better - 1) I don't yet own a tripod, and it would have been great here, 2) I mistakenly forgot to check ISO before shooting in P mode here, and it was left on 1600 from the night before. Am I right in thinking that I should have shot with 200. Minor pp to crop and increase the color saturation a bit (it was a little bland without it).

Thanks,
Dave

The K-x should give you very good results at ISO 1600 provided exposure is right, but having a much lower ISO would have meant less freezing action.

I agree with Ash. With this camera 1600 is fine and even at that, you were clearly in bright light, you could have opened the lens up a little more and stopped even more motion blur with a higher shutter speed.

I'm not sure but I think more than anything, you might have missed the focus point. It looks like the rock behind the duck is sharp and not the body. Looking at the feet, which should be frozen at 1/1000th, they seem a bit soft. did you use the center point focus? If not, switch to that with wildlife and faster moving subjects.

A bit of a tough scene in terms of contrast and a little PP help was probably needed.

This photo makes me very hungry haha ok just kidding. It is a pretty good photo, but there seems to be a slight blurriness to it.

The high ISO doesn't look like it works too well with this one, and the blurredness of the dusk isn't really helping either. I think that this one had a lot of potential though, maybe if you tinker around with the ISO and try to find a better shutter speed to suit it then you might be able to get more of a scene like this one.
