it's a decent still shot but the subject is tad too blurry and not sharp enough for a keeper pic, perhaps due to over cropping although the less cropped pic you posted show this too. you're probably better off going back to shoot from different angles or get closer up than continue to crop and pp the same photo.

Brit - I like the idea and will give it a shot.

Here is a 66% crop with fake lens blur applied to the background. Just my first shot at this, and I'm not sure if the crop is too close and the blur settings too high. Just an example to see if there is any promise to this approach.

That works, try brightening the highlights and darkening the mid tones a little to make it pop.

Having said that, PP and cropping will not make you a better photographer so don't get fixated on that aspect.

Thanks for all the advice. I've adjusted the curves slightly..

and the comment on not over processing is duly noted. I love photography for the moments, but I also love to see what I can do afterwards in pp to make it something special. I'm still finding my balance with that.

nice work on adjusting the contrast and blurring out the background. did you apply any sharpening in pp ?

Do you have a sharper pic of the subject, assuming that you took a good series of shots? or that is the best one ? maybe you can make that lens sing better if you can be closer and catch more of the subject in the frame, shouldn't be too hard with ducks - or i'm more used to those feed 'em ducks around here.
