Pentaxians who are from or have been to North Carolina:

What's your favourite photo location in the state? The Blue Ridge Parkway was recently featured in Popular Photography (Just in time for my holiday to the mountains). What are some other good places to take photos in North Carolina?

Asheville has some great places to take shots. The biggest place there - the Biltmore Estate has lots to see. Chimney Rock park also has some really nice scenes. You've already mentioned my favourite place - the Blue Ridge Parkway. If I think of any others I'll let you know. You live in a beautiful state.

That's actually where I'm going. So I'll look out for some good shots.

I went to Cherokee, but then I'm part Cherokee, I'm not sure it would hold the same interest for someone who isn't.

I don't live in Asheville, but I go there often. If you're interested in street photography of a variety of interesting people, downtown Asheville - specifically, Pack Square - is fertile ground.

The Blue Ridge mountains are very picturesque. Especially when the fall colours happen. You'd never believe there are so many shades of red and orange. And, there are quaint towns with great houses to take pictures of as well. A real southern treat. Went there in the early 90's.

You might like to visit Kill Devil Hill at Kitty Hawk, NC where Wilbur and Orville Wright made history.

Cape Hatteras and the Fort Raleigh historical site are fairly close to there, too...

I also ventured up to Washington DC, just a few hours drive away by car.

And I went to an NC State vs Duke football game. Lots of great candids. I used my Program + and had a great time snapping candids of the tailgate parties and of the fans (and the cheerleaders - hey! I was single then and my Canadian accent was something they liked to hear!) .

I think in the journey through the parkway there is Grandfather Mountain. Worth the small hike for the great vistas.

Outer banks, wild ponies!!!! Awesome sight. Most of the beaches are lovely actually from what I saw as a kid. Been there mostly, though we did do the mountains once.

The mountains are beautiful--especially when the laurel is in bloom. I think a photo expedition to the tidewater low-country might also be fun.

Then check out the museum in Cherokee.
Last time I was there I was looking at this huge lone decorated stick hanging on the wall of the museum. A middle age kind of guy came up to me and introduced himself, then pointed to it and said " I made that." To which" I replied what is it.?" He explained it was a coup stick, and that the first three times a young man went into battle he wasn't allowed to try and kill anyone. He had to touch an enemy with the "coup stick" and then leave. I said "It's really really long." He said, "The first time they went into battle, they weren't very brave. The next one would be shorter."

I live in Morganton, NC. The parkway is about a 20 minute drive from my house. I travel it about once a month to shoot. Usually I go during the week so as not to get into a lot of traffic. The western part of the state is excellent shooting territory.
So far I have 5 working Spotmatics and about 8 spares for parts if needed. Lenses are various brands. Mostly Pentax though.
Hope you enjoy your trip.
