New Zealand Beaches

Hi there

Planning a trip in December and wondering what the best locations are to take a great shot of the New Zealand coast line? I think I have it all figured out for the South Island, but for the North Island there is still some doubt. Northland or Coromandel? Or somewhere else? What is the most photogenic location? Any hints more than welcome

Hi, I live in the South Island of New Zealand.
I suggest you include the Moeraki Boulders beach near Oamaru, some of the beaches in the Catlins area south of Dunedin and the beaches in Able Tasman National Park.
For a non beach location, don't miss the spectacular rock formations at Castle Hill, about 100 km west of Christchurch.

Gisborne, and East Cape have stunning beaches, as does most of the Bay of Plenty right through to Coromandel.

Around the Coromandel Peninsula you are spoilt for choice

Northland around the Bay of Islands area also has a range of stunning beaches if you know where to look

Update: went to the Moeraki boulders beach - spectacular! Although difficult to photograph when there are people clambering all over them...

I am Northland born and yep some stunning little bays in that part of the country. The whole coast has roads running on or near so get off state highway 1 and have a wander though the countryside. One thing to be sure is that the NZ coast is seldom more than 50kms away from the main highway. (And if it is you can visit the lakes and the mountains instead.)

If you're gonna be in Northland check out Mimiwhangata Coastal Farm park, I have posted some pictures here recently. Hardly anyone there and its very accessible. A little bit further up the coast there is also Oakura Bay, Helena Bay, Teal Bay, which are very picturesque and not the usual tourist trap that you'll find elsewhere.

I thought of Mimiwhangata as my family are regulars there but didn't want to publicise the place. Hidden paradise.

Sorry, the secret is out. Sounds like only locals know this place. The nearby DOC campsite was fully booked but they have their own beach, these next beaches were almost deserted.

Shall we turn this into a Mimiwhangata thread?
These are from the same weekend...
