Suggestions for No California and Oregon drive

I will be San Francisco in early September and then driving to Portland, Oregon. Some places/drives that I am planning on include: Crater Lake, Trail of 100 giants in California and highway 101 in Oregon. Have seen a lot of great photos on this site from that general area so am excited to visit it. Any advice appreciated.

Be sure to take the left lane off-ramp on the Bay bridge going East (right before you go into the tunnel). That puts you on Treasure Island with a great view of the SF skyline. Also, the boat tour to Alcatraz island provides a great opportunity for skyline shots (as well as some good ones on the island). Coit Tower is another great overlook of the city where you can get a fantastic 360 degree panorama. Plan on doing a bit of walking since parking is very limited in places.

September might be getting into the iffy range for Crater Lake. They probably will have their first light snow by then (not a problem since it will be light and quickly gone) - check the CL weather ahead of your travel if you get any later than September. Work your way clockwise around the lake from the lodge. Most of the best shots are first with fewer toward the end of that circle. Hit all the viewpoints on that route since some are breathtaking but you have to check them out to see which ones.

Oregon trip

We moved to Oregon 16 years ago from the midwest (corn and bean country). Oregon scenery to this day still makes my heart soar. The photo opportunities are legion, whether you're looking for nature, history, coastal scenes, or, or, or. . . . . it's too much.

My suggestion is to visit the Travel Oregon website to get a better idea of places to investigate. My experience is that while good planning is key, some of my best photo gems have been surprises discovered whilst on the road to somewhere else.

Good luck and God speed

Several years ago we were fortunate that friends lived "out there" and invited us for a visit. Spent several days (no where near enough time) on the Oregon coast! Bandon and Newport were specially nice - do a search on "Oregon coast lighthouses" for some great photo ops - the Yaquina Head one is specially nice!! The Heceta Head lighthouse is in an incredible location!!

Wish I were going with you!

Practically the whole coast of Oregon is public domain so just stop wherever you want, The Favell Museum of Western Art in Klamath Falls is a nice stop, Not that far form Crater Lake. Oregon Caves National Monument near Medford is pretty neat. We took in the Tillamook Cheese factory tour back in 1991. They also have an air museum in Tillamook.

We drove the whole coast of Oregon on route 101. The Fort Clatsop - Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is a quick stop if You have time too. Really brings home the magnitude of what they accomplished for those of us back east.

Every time I see this thread title I keep wondering why you don't want to drive in California and Oregon! LOL. When I was in CA a few years ago in the San Fran area I took my wife into the Sonoma area and found a few nice things to photograph up there - also over towards Muir woods if you drive past it to the sea that area is really nice looking and fun. I don't know much about further north however.

I've done it with a combo of my 18-135 and K3 before, with my old DA* 60-250 as backup. I've also done it with my Sigma 12-14, Sigma 24-70, Tamron 70-200, and Pentax DFA 150-450. Last time I did it I just brought the K1 and Tamron 24-135 with the DFA 150-450 as backup. It all depends, what lenses and camera do you have already?

Okay, just looked at your profile. Bring the 18-55, Tamron 24-135, and Tamron 70-300 with you. You will need to stop the 70-300 down to f/8 -f/11 to get the best out of it. You will likely use the 24-135 the most. If you can snag a Tamron 10-24 before you go then do so and take it instead of the 18-55. If you can snag a Pentax 55-300 then I'd do that to replace the Tamron 70-300.

Ive made the drive from the bay area to the puget sound more times than i can count..... definitely hug the coast as much as possible. Sonoma, mendocino are beautiful coastlines. Oregon coast too but my fave are mendocino and del norte. Stop in the town of mendocino and walk out on the headlands.
The road inland along the Umpqua river though is really something special, goes through a town called Elkton.
Unless you get in a hurry, do not go I-5. But if you do, theres a little town called Talent that has a great pizza place called the grotto.

Thanks very much for all the helpful suggestions. Voice of Reason's responses makes me realize that I haven't updated my profile in a long time. At the moment, plan on bringing a K 3 with da 16-85 wr, da 55-300 wr and da* 50-135. I also have a Sigma 10-20 that I may carry as well.

Around SF.

The remains of the Palace of Fine Arts.

The turn off at the S end of the Golden Gate bridge.

And the N end.

Legion of Honor outside...

and inside.

Not far away from the LOH is Sutro baths.

Mentioned before - Coit tower and Alcatraz.

If you get into Sebastopol, there are a couple blocks on Florence Ave on the N side of Hwy 12 with a couple dozen of these in the front yards.

Not far from Sebastopol is Santa Rosa, or vice versa. The Charles Schulz museum is there, though I'd call ahead due to the major fires they had in Santa Rosa.

Charles Schulz is easy to find in Pleasant Hills cemetery in Sebastopol.
