Yeah, dust resistant as well, IIRC.

Incorrect. AW is a considerably higher level of weather sealing than WR.

I found this confirming information:

AW: All Weather. This signifies the highest degree of sealing against dust and rain. Don't confuse this with WR: These are weather resistant which are sealed so that they better withstand use in light rain and blowing dust. WR and AW both designate weather-sealed lenses. Non-star lenses that are designated WR use a "simplified weather-resistant construction" to protect against ingress of water. DA* lenses, although not indicated as such in the lens name, are considered AW (newer boxes for DA* lenses are often marked as such) and are "dust-proof and water-resistant because each part is individually sealed" offering a higher level of protection against environmental conditions than the WR designation indicates.

So, at the moment I am thinking 16-50 always on until it rains then 18-135. In decent weather, 15-31-77 depending on the subject. And the DA300+TC for the birds and such. Like Gary H Perth suggested, I will take this kit out on shorter trips locally and see how my back fares.
When hiking, it's a good idea to keep your long lens on the camera because subjects of long shots tend to be fleeting; birds, etc. There's usually time to change lenses for wider shots, such as landscapes, since they don't tend to move too quickly.

That is really good advice that I had never really thought about but often I have done that or put my "all around" lens on (like an 18-135).

I was just thinking that.. I have this widget from Peak Design that clamps onto the backpack's shoulder strap and allows the lens+body to hang by the lens foot. It's not bad, the wobbling is not too distracting.

I will probably burn in Pentax hell for this but currently I am practicing with this lightest always-on-me DSLR set I could come up with so far.

NIKON D3500(365g); NIKON 35/1.8(210g); TAMRON 16-300 (540g) = total weight 1115g = 2.46 lbs

Who knows, maybe come July I will be in a much better form and an extra kilo or two won't make a difference, I sure hope so. My dream is to be able to use the 15-31-77-300-K3 kit and still breath normally after the 5th mile of the hike I am 5'8", 54 yo, and not in great physical form (yet) so every gram matters to me.

Btw, while looking for the lightest Pentax DSLR I found Pentax K-S1 at 558 g, not bad for a feature-full body. But, I don't own one of these.

That Nikon is 530g with battery and card.

Nikon D3500 gets smaller and cheaper, battery life gets a boost: Digital Photography Review

Weight (inc. batteries) 365 g (0.80 lb / 12.87 oz)

Also, an SD card weigh "nothing"

I am planning a July-August trip to Europe and thought I’d ask for your advice about the smartest photo gear kit to take with me. The itinerary will include hiking in Slovakia, a few days in Vienna, sailing and kayaking in the Mazury region in northern Poland.

I'm sure it'll work out well for you, but for me, smart photo gear that includes hiking, sailing and kayaking needs to be weatherproof. That was my main reason for going to Pentax digital from Canon film. YMMV

The low weight is largely due to the pentamirror viewfinder. I suspect lower build quality and lack of weather sealing also contribute. Your call.

KP (WR) 703gm + DA*16~50 (AW) 565gm + DA*50~135 (AW) 970gm + DA*300 (AW) 1165gm.

You don’t need to carry all the lenses all the time, but they easily fit in a small backpack for the actual traveling. If you are worried about the gap between 135 and 300 bring the 1.4xTC for the 50-135 and use it for the 300 as well. KP and 16~50 in a dry bag will kayak just fine. You could even take a DA21 or DA40 for street and forget the bag altogether for those uses.

Buy the lenses used here. The prices are very good lately.

Yep, I am very aware of the potential compromise.. What's more, in this scenario, I would probably delegate all "wet" picture taking to the Oly TG waterproof P&S, which has served me well in the past.

Thank you. I need this kind of advice. The D3500 is not super fun to shoot with so that kit is a sizeable compromise. I guess my local walks with the various kits will tell me what I can tolerate. It helps that I have no doubts at all about the rest of my gear...
