I'm planning a side trip to Rhode Island next week before joining up with friends in Vermont for camping. I have never visited Newport and assembled the following itinerary using Google Maps, Photographers Ephemeris, and other sources. Feedback from PF members who know Newport is greatly appreciated.
1) Day 1 late afternoon: Drive to
Castle Hill Lighthouse. Collective wisdom of the internet recommends parking in a nearby marina and walking though woods to reach the lighthouse.
a) Photograph lighthouse and Newport Bridge from south side of lighthouse during golden hour and sunset.
b) As blue hour progresses, relocate to north side of lighthouse. Wait for it to get dark enough to photograph stars and Milky Way behind lighthouse. Aiming south gets dark skies over ocean, and the back side of the lighthouse appears shielded so maybe I can find a position with minimal glare from the lighthouse.
2) Day 2 midnight: Drive to
Brenton Point. Park along on Ocean Ave.
a) Use rocky shore as foreground for Milky Way photos. (stay safe distance from water, especially if I haven't had a chance to scout the area during daylight)
b) Continue photographing shore during blue hour and sunrise. Sun will rise almost parallel with Ocean Ave.
3) Day 2 after sunrise: Drive very short distance to
Brenton Point State Park parking lot.
a) Photograph estate ruins early morning
4) Day 2 sunset: TBD. Maybe use
Battery Park/Fort Greene, or one of the waterfront access points to the south, to get the sun setting below the Newport Bridge.
5) Day 3 sunrise:
Black Point, Narragansett
