everyone on the trip, except me, are more birders than photographers which means I may not have much time to take photos as the group will be wanting to collect as many diverse sightings of birds as possible. so I have to assume I will be shooting hand held or braced against a vehicle's hood unless we set up spotting scopes and I can set up a tripod

should I use my KP, K 3 II or K 3 I will want 2 cameras with me

lenses ?

[ any need for wide angle or non telephoto primes - my other lenses can be found by looking at my profile ]

HD Pentax-DA 16 - 85mm F3.5-5.6 WR

HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE

HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm F4.5 - 5.6 ED DC AW

SMC DA * 300mm F4 ED (IF ) SDM

HD Pentax -DA AF rear converter 1.4 AW

thanks for any and all help

I've never used the 150-450, but it has to go with you. The KP is the low light champ, so if you are in any forested areas it will be your best option. If you are just in grasslands and lakes, maybe having two K-3 cameras may be easier, unless you are comfortable with both. The other lens is the question of wanting one to be lighter weight or not. I would lean to the DA* 300 and converter. I think the only thing you might want wider than 150 would be if you want to mix in some landscapes, with flocks of birds, group photos, etc. Myself I can see using a tripod for birds unless you're shooting a nest or something, but then most of my experience shooting birds is warblers, and they constantly move. Sounds like a great trip, have fun!

I am not certain how your group will observe, but in my area, birders often wait in certain locations for awhile to see how many birds show up, especially during migratory periods, you will probably have time to set up a tripod and relax.
I would take the longest lens possible, birds are small, and often far away. I would also take a 50mm prime or prime macro since you will probably see butterfly and flowers, and awide angle to take in the panoramic estuaries, and the sunsets
I look forward to seeing the results
