It's a real jewel. When my gym closed down late last year I decided it should be my replacement, so bought a membership. I've only done some of the basic, shorter trails yet I managed 3km on Sunday. Now I just need to get there more often — it's only a 20 minute drive away!

It is a lovely spot, and the bird life there is amazing

Yeah it was pretty challenging. There were spots of sun which they seemed never to be entirely in. They often had a patch on their back which just made the camera's job harder, so I was trying to get them entirely in shade when they got close enough — at least that one wasn't at 300mm! But outside of those patches it could only be described as "heavily shaded". The tail gives away the shutter speed. This may actually be one of those cases where AF.C and continuous "drive" makes sense, in the hopes of catching the brief periods where the bird wasn't moving. I might also consider letting the ISO above 6400 next time, but probably only one stop at most. PhotoLab can nail most of the 6400 noise so long as it's exposed well. Much boosting in post and it gets harder.

55-300 PLM helps though, and I thought the KP did a pretty good job

The PLM has shifted my default aperture to f/8.0 from f/11 which is a help for starters. It was pretty good at finding focus although I have found if it does miss, it can seem to get "lost" requiring me to give it something easy nearby and then trying again.

As for the KP, it does indeed do well on the sensor front, though I had another case of it forgetting it had a fully charged battery inside. I thought the focusing was stuffed but realised the camera was still dark. Had to pop the battery out and in to get it going again. Genuine Pentax battery, too.

Weird, is it a known fault?

Not that I can find with a search, but let's see if it's a common one.

amazing
I thought I was the man going to ASA 800 on the Spotmatic

my bird on forest floor setting is TAv with single shot and centre AF on the other button

I want to try remote control for birds... the nightly 'walking of the Quail' past the window
using the cellphone app to control it, presumably with electronic shutter to avoid the crash

If I used remote control via the app on my KP, I'd want to be sure the birds were due any minute. Wifi slaughters the battery. Saw some quails at Zealandia on the most recent trip, though they were not in a good enough setting for a photo. I did catch them the previous time, though. Still not the best of settings — on a sealed path. There were also babies.

They are amazing creatures, the tiny balls of fluff can fly at an impossibly undeveloped state.
Our troup have 20 now all good size for a baking
I still haven't got a new battery, might get kennedys to throw one in with the 77

Revisiting old photos again. I think the biggest upgrade between K10D and K5 was a new, dust free sensor.

I remember using your DA 40 during our walk around Whanganui a few years back Pete. It is such a nice lens, it inspired me to go an buy one for myself
